East Central South Dakota | A lot of South Dakota that was too wet, but still sitting alright got too much rain yesterday. South Dakota lost some more acres from the top half of the state yesterday. Prairie potholes don't dry up. 1993 all over again if the pattern doesn't change real fast. You simply run out of calendar.
I would argue the real production story is on the flat ground with potholes that doesn't drain. The poor folks that lost houses, roads and bridges are in some rolling country that drains off the hills. Crops on flat and black with constant big rains will eventually give up. Minnesota is just a ridiculous mess and if the crop ratings don't reflect that in a big way on Monday, it reinforces what we already know.
The rain has already affected future basis in a huge area. If you have ever been lucky enough to see a ProExporter production/use study, you already know what I am saying. Southern Minnesota and NW Iowa are huge production areas and yet are corn deficient. They are net importers. Where is it going to come from and how much is it going to cost to get it there = strong basis for the entire area. |
