I have barb wire fences with 1 hot wire about knee high. To keep cows from sticking there head between the barb wire. Lighting has ruined 2 of my chargers already this spring. I dont know if it is coming in my 120vac or my hot wire on fences. What is the best thing going to protect my chargers?

Tie your charger cord in knots. I went through several fencers in a span of 2 years before I did this. Takes about 3 knots to do the job. Current fencer is going on 7 or 8 years without even a blown fuse. The knot disperses the energy field that destroys the fencers before it gets into the fencer. I do this with my home computer and other valuable electronic devices. Just a simple knot does the trick, but takes a minimum of 3. My brother was an electronics guy in the Navy and worked on radars and gun controls and that is what they did to combat energy surges and it works.

Non of those things will stop a power surge coming in on your 120 volt power source. That is what takes out most fencers.

The Internet

Gallagher do lightening diverters https://www.gallagher.eu/en_gb/lightning-diverter/064802 I've put two on our systems,. Whether or not they would do anything remains to be seen, I've had a 6 inch post blown to pieces in the past

True only for the fencer side, which I didn't point out, thinking most folks would have a surge protection on the 120 side if they have a tendency to have power surges.

I'll have to add the knot trick to my arsenal. Doesn't cost anything, heck I might already have some extension cords fixed up that way. LOL

Buy a cyclops charger and extended warranty if you want extra insurance https://taylorfence.net/index.php Lighting arrestees might help but I've never put a lot of faith in them. The cyclops chargers have built in surge protection that's replaceable in the worst case scenario.

You want a lightning arrester no matter what .   Get that, and go from there.  We lost several to lightining way back.  Haven't had one hit since we put in an arrestor many years ago.

Do you run the Boss fence charger? Just wondering how you like it? I just purchased the Boss and in the process of getting it set up.

No I have a brute and a super, they work way better than the 100mile zabra they replaced, can really hear the click. As far as storm damage have had a fuse blown up to the point it had to be picked out, charger was fine though. The brute did need a repair in its first year, not sure why but did discover the plug it was plugged into was reverse polarity.

You can hear the super wind up before the pulse, can't imagine what the boss would be like.

I assume you have an 8' ground rod for your fencer? Add an 8' ground rod and attach the barb wires. This will provide a pathway to ground away from your fencer. Then add an 8' ground rod to your outlet the fencer is plugged into. Good luck.

install a spark gap and choke coil on the fence feed. use as large as possible surge suppressor on the ac line. direct hits usually take out chargers anyway.

The Boss has a very loud thumping sound when clicking. i took a claw hammer and touched the wire to the post. I can tell it’s extremely hot and way way hotter than any fence charger than I have ever been around. I usually will grab a hot wire, but I am not going to attempt this Boss. This thing will command it’s respect to whatever touches it.
