Just for follow up, met with the surgeon to see if we could do something about both my knees. Thought maybe just clean them up and got the reply, we’re going to replace both of them. Basically bone on bone with very little lining let. He won’t do both at the same time so what words of wisdom does everyone have for recovery. Thanks

Had mine done 6years ago now. Do the therapy and you'll be back at it a month or so after surgery. Had one done in summer then second after harvest. Pretty standard surgery and recovery any more. Good luck!

A good physical therapist can do wonders, after a gel injection.  Don't automatically get surgery.

I have two friends with post knee replacement surgery issues.Ones in a wheel chair for most of the day.The other is in severe pain for 6 months,,walking gingerly with cane,,cannot do her own shopping.I would choose very wisely on where its done.I know many rave on how great it is.I have friend who worked dairy ,as a 30 something he needed a set of knees, wore them out in 20 years,,second set gave him severe issues with loose connections,,3rd surgery got him corrected it seems. He has had 34 years of fake knees probably not walking without though.Just dont take "joe bonesaw" as he is local...

I have only had a hip replaced, looking at doing the other yet this year. First went well.

I know many people that have had knees done. The ones that were active for years before the surgery have all done well with replacements done by good doctors. The couch potato types have not done as well. Always a risk of poor outcomes, but living with the issue is a poor outcome also.

This is by and large, the answer. Deal with the discomfort early on and do the pt as required and the outcome is much better. Neighbor had both done at once a few yrs ago and is a new man. You don't say how old you are. They seem like they're good for about 20-25 yrs of fairly heavy use. Know several ff's who have had them done and were able to come back to work in under 6 mos.

Dont let them go too long . If bone on bone dont let them talk you into gel shots . Had one done mid december and the other end of January by the best . Am able to work . Nighttime is the worst for me . I had no choice . Wouldnt want to do it every day

Ice Machine,

I had my second full knee replacement 7 weeks ago, used ICE machine. Tossed walker away day one, carried four-legged cane for 2 weeks. Started PT day after surgery, knew what had to happen from 1st full knee replacement two years ago. Done with PT last Friday, able to straight leg at week one, bend at +120 degrees at four weeks. Almost forgot, used ICE machine around the clock.

Now the other story, friend of mine I just seen today, had his 1st full knee replacement 12-26-23, used ICE machine, still doing PT once a week, Can get leg within 5 degrees straight, Only at 100-degree bend. Doc put him back under, could only get leg to 110 degrees.

We both walked with a very noticeable limp before surgery. Everyone is different.

Did I mention get ICE machine, it's your freind.

If you have two knees replaced. When both are replaced one could cause a lot of pain and the other knee might be a breeze. My therapist told me It doesn’t matter if it is knee number one or knee number two. First knee I had replaced required every pain pill they gave me. Second knee was done six months later and I used one pain pill because I was told I would need it. This was six years ago. And yes it is true the physically active knee replacement patients get along with the surgery better than the couch potatoes.

I had a total knee replacement in Jan 2020, when I was 68. No issues with the knee but I do have some nerve damage on the lower outside of the knee. Mostly a tingling sensation about the size of a quarter but some days as big as the palm of my hand. Then it's very sensitive, barely touch it & it will feel like someone is stabbing me. Daughter had a torn acl & meniscus right after college & has the same sensation.

I was pretty sure you were young yet! We have had some very senior members in the past. Thanks for clarifying!

Take care of it. Don't let this "blah blah blah is in a wheel chair and blahablah can't walk" crap affect anything you do. Listen to your surgeon and more importantly the therapists after. I haven't had surgery ever, I do have a split meniscus that I had a cortisone shot 8 years ago to relieve the pain and that knee is ok. I have seen multiple clients have knee replacements and other surgeries including my dad that can't handle any pain. He has been in good shape after 3 months of therapy. Rest of guys I work with are all fine, too.

Best of luck. No need to be in pain.

Odds are good it will be OK but my replacements went well and were OK but now I have a lot of pain in them and the doctors say they look OK but can't figure where the pain is from. Thinking it could be an issue with the cement, allergy or rejection.

Thanks everyone. The plan is to do the right one at the end of May, and as soon as able do the left. Surgeons recommendation because if you only do the one, you’ll but more weight on the good one and start the wear out and pain process again. Thanks Again!!!!!!

I had a torn meniscus from a ladder incident that was self medicated for several years until it was getting worse.
Orthopedic doc treated it with all the injections and draining for couple more years till the pain was too much to deal with without heavy meds.
Finally got to the point that he refused to treat it anymore, got it replaced and fought through the PT and pain to get back on my feet.
Get around great now but the other knee is wearing out now.
I will get it done when the time comes.

Do the PT, get tough and it will get better.

I have 2 total knees. Both are doing well. 4 months ago with the last one. There are some recommended exercises before surgery. They help with faster recovery. If you have been limping for a long time it will take longer for recovery because you need to retrain your muscles.

Near Richmond, IN

I had both knees replaced on Dec.4 of this winter.  Had PT 3x weekly until the end of January.  Really got along real well and right now I feel like I'm just about totally back to normal---except no knee pain.  I'm 74 but was fairly active and still farm so that must help.  I wanted both done at the same time so I only had to put up with the pain once. LOL  I actually had both of mine done at the same time by the same Dr.  I got what they described as "Smart Knees" in that they have some type of sensor in them that relays the knee activity, stride length, angle of bending, speed, etc., to your smart phone and then it is relayed to the Dr's.  The Dr I had was the only one installing them so he did one knee and then did the second as soon as he finished the first.  Had them done at New Castle, Indiana hospital and this doctor group includes the Dr that developed the knee replacement (I was told)

I damaged mine last fall, felt like a rubber band snapping in my knee while walking. X ray told them my knee was bout wore out but the mri showed tore miniscus with some rough edges. They said my cartilage was not all that bad for 68 years old and probably would last me. They done minor surgery, two holes the size of a pencil, cleaned up the damage and every day it got better. It’s been bout a month and I’m probably 95 0/0 normal.
