CNY | My neighbors built this in the 80’s, we had a bunch of wet falls and it was before SP choppers were very common. 2 Hesston I think choppers. Pulled a side dump Richardton wagon behind, they blew into that. They said hardest part was figuring out the shaft off the front of the engine and getting everything turning right in the drop box. It worked great, they ended up doing a lot of custom work for others with it They were 3 brothers who came from CT, bought a farm up here in the late 70’s early 80’s when they were in their early 20’s. One of them bought a old dozer and started pushing out hedgerows, ended up turning it into a successful excavation/tile/dirt work business. The other 2 slowly grew the farm, the next generation is milking 1500 now. One of the brothers passed, they put the choppers back on for his celebration of life. Good guys, good neighbors, always tinkering with stuff, trying to make it better (IMG_3275 (full).jpeg) (IMG_3278 (full).jpeg) (IMG_3277 (full).jpeg) (IMG_3276 (full).jpeg) (IMG_3279 (full).jpeg) (IMG_3274 (full).jpeg) Attachments ---------------- IMG_3275 (full).jpeg (171KB - 258 downloads) IMG_3278 (full).jpeg (164KB - 249 downloads) IMG_3277 (full).jpeg (161KB - 247 downloads) IMG_3276 (full).jpeg (161KB - 247 downloads) IMG_3279 (full).jpeg (150KB - 241 downloads) IMG_3274 (full).jpeg (162KB - 256 downloads)

SE PA | I was just talking about this with a friend last week after seeing pictures of it posted from Empire or Ag Progress Days back then. It looked like in one picture the spouts were turned to chop into trucks. It would be awesome to see that thing run. I imagine it would be a neat beast to operate. I'm glad to see it's still around!

Memphis, NY | They always ran it with a dump wagon. I've seen the pics you're referring to. The story goes that new Holland asked them to take it to the empire farm days to showcase the 2115, and after the first day, asked them to take it home.

north-central Indiana west of Fulton | I’m betting it wasn’t used that much because it wasn’t handy and did not work well.

SE Manitoba | Dave9110 - 1/28/2024 15:46 I’m betting it wasn’t used that much because it wasn’t handy and did not work well. Well - - - AIUI - - - its a good concept except it doesn't work real well. The front end of the crankshaft is NOT designed to transmit the entire output of the engine. Means that you snap off the front end of the crank when things get loaded heavy. I'm guessing that the tractor had a 3306 in it - - - its a good engine but not up to putting all the jam out the front end of the crank. Remember reading about it at the time - - - thought of using it on a tractor with no live pto - - -just didn't do it. Its not a bad idea - - - great for traction in tough going but somehow one would have to pull the power from the back end of the crank.

Could you just turn the engine around or would that open a whole new can of worms?

SE Manitoba | Kingfisher567 - 1/28/2024 19:34 Could you just turn the engine around or would that open a whole new can of worms? Hm - - - then its - - - how do you power the tractor?

The 903 was an ok truck engine but for something where you needed pull down torque - - - they just didn't long term cut it. Also wouldn't be an original, aiui, steiger didn't run 903s, 3306 3406 cats, 855 cummins, there was a v8 cat in the tiger (as an option - - - I think) and the cummins kta1150 for the 470. Can't remember what was in the Bearcat 225. Earlier models (before the one pictured) had detroits - - - don't know enough about those. The very earliest models - - - I only know that they existed - - - not much about them!

Columbia Basin, Ephrata, WA | It looks like you’d have to stop and blow out the radiator every pass. I guess if it’s that or being stuck in the mud getting nothing done, you choose the radiator cleaning.

If you're talking the Massey's I think they were cheap to buy and that really helped convince buyers that they were 'good'. If you have one - - - - drop in a 470 Detroit (trying to remember the # - - - 14l engine) and then come back and talk! I thought if I could find a 4840 with a pto and then repower - - - that would be a decent machine for cheap $$$.
