Mosinee Wi | We want to raise a few hogs for ourselves and a couple Nieghbors. We can get a Nieghbor to come over and grind ear corn for us. Everyone wants natural raised. What type of recipe on ground feed would be good? I remember when we had a couple hog on farm years ago we gave them.the left over colostrum from our cows . They went nuts over it. Any other ideas.

Texas | Following. I’ve done ok feeding wheat seed cleanings, but they are a little lean and it takes longer. A lot of that is wild oats around here. Best results I’ve had is adding beef milk replacer at 10 or so oz a day dumped on top of feed. But that’s not cost effective feeding more than 1-2 unless you can find old bags guys didn’t use up that got funky. I have pretty poor gain per day I bet. But I’m feeding a growing group for friends and family and the seed cleanings are cheap.

Dennis +1, let them shell their own off the cob, feed them grind shell corn. Never fed cobs to the pigs. May have tossed a bale of 2nd or 3rd cutting in with shelled corn, soybean meal, a mineral/vitamin pellet though.

near dyersville iowa | I wish my memory was better. I believe 375 lbs bean meal per ton for.grower, and 275 for finisher. I hope.thats close.

East of Broken Bow | Location? If you have access to alfalfa hay, hogs really like it, and it makes the meat tender. Don't force feed it, and don't overdo it. Just have them on full feed corn & meal, and toss a couple pitchforks of it to them every day or two. When I did that, I had guys willing to pay 1/3 more for the ones I did that to, they liked them so much. Only needs to be the last 2-3 weeks or so. Oats is good feed, can replace about 1/3 of the corn in ration with oats. Younger pigs especially did well on oats.

Piglets in particular - - - you will find the best ones dead - - - the oat hulls penetrate their guts. (As me how I know!)

Nance County, Ne | Growing up we would take slices from small square alfalfa bales and run them through the hammer mill. Don't recall why but remember doing that.

SE Indiana | To grow your hog you will need a ground feed product as most of todays hybrids produce a very dense grain that has a hard kernel. You can balance the protein levels with a variety of grains and grain products. Some of the feed ingredients you may want to consider along with those already mentioned are field peas, barley, rye, wheat, and I’m told silage was used in some countries. Just try to balance the protein and nutrient levels to match the pigs age.

s.e. Pa | Our feed store has a concentrate of soybean meal and minerals. We would grind shelled corn and add the concentrate at 1:5 ratio.

sw ontario | mosinee dave - 1/27/2024 11:39 Everyone wants natural raised. What type of recipe on ground feed would be good? . Not being a a smart axx but somebody needs to define "natural raised"...do they mean "without anti biotics" , "organic feed, non -gmo grains" , not "vaccinated" ect. To keep it simple any feed store can supply a supplement (concentrate) to be added to ground shelled corn (or wheat, barley, ect.) . It will state inclusion rate needed for size of pigs

Amherst WI | I think you will find out that finding piglets around here is very difficult especially when you are trying to get them the same time as the fair kids need them. Everyone needs a hobby, but I can assure you that you'd be money ahead to call the locker plant and just buy some from them and you'd probably be hundreds of dollars ahead in the whole project. BTW your niece is doing a good job getting my back where it belongs. Thanks for the recommendation...

Va | You can always do it manually using the Pearson Square method. Calculate for protein. Add a Vit and mineral premix. CP requirements lower as pigs grow. Start at 17-18 and lower it to 12-13 as they get over 200 lbs. Search for a CP curve to give you an idea.
