Grabill, Indiana | Well we finally go the soybeans in the ground for our first crop of soybeans. I hired a neighbor to no-till the beans since I did not want to disturb the soil structure with tillage. The Great Plains drill did a good job except for some areas where the tractor tires compacted the ground and a few beans were placed a little shallow.
The biggest frustration was the lack of adjusting the seed population. I purchased seed based on a 160,000 population on 50 acres. We actually ran out of beans when we finished 40 acres. Part of the issue was the difficulty of seeing your actual coverage in sod and the high weeds. I ran down a few extra bags and finished the planting. Now we just need the Round-Up to work for burn down and for mother nature to follow our protocol.
