Out scouting fields this afternoon, just thought I'd share some pics. Currently 92 degrees & windy. The potential is there yet for a bumper, but if we don't get significant rain soon, I'm afraid it will be a repeat of 2012.

If we don’t start getting significant rain, I think it will be worse than 2012 here. I could be wrong but I don’t think ‘12 was this hot and dry this early.

Here in 12 all season long the ground looked like it was freshly worked because we never got enough rain to run it together like how it is in those pictures. The ground was still loose all the way to tassel and it was hot earlier in 12 here than it has been up there this year. Don’t mean to downplay your problem but giving some perspective from here what 12 was like and Texas,Oklahoma,Kansas and Colorado I’m sure can top all of us. Prayers!

Our ground looks like it’s freshly worked yet and yo can find pretty much every 4 wheeler track and foot print in the ground. Kinda like the moon that way until you step outside. Then it’s like being in the desert.

100+ again here today in East Dakota

My daughter wants the eastern part of the state to become “west Wisconsin “ and us to stay Minnesota. Until that happens “East Dakota “ works for me. West of hwy 71 has a fair amount of similarity to the eastern Dakota’s anyway;)

To the original topic. At 8 this morning it was already 81. At 8 tonight was still 96. Our cushion is about used up.

More like 33% APH for us in 2012. Some did better, some worse, a few got zeroed out. Too soon to say if this year will be comparable. Tonight's potential rain will tell the next chapter of the story. After tonight there's no potential for additional rain in the 10 day forecast, but most of next week will be back in the 90s.

Normal high temp for mid June is 78.

There were quite a few $400/acre for 3 year rental contracts done, with $100/A fall N application followed by massive PP in 2013. That took care of a lot of tax planning problems for the next few years…. Tommy Vavra and others offering/paying $500+ rent until they went broke for 2013 and 2014 kept rents high. If someone can figure out how to pay $500 rent on 185 APH ground in an area with a typical -$.50 NC basis and not lose a ton of money I would love to hear it. 2014 was not a good year here. Quite a bit of 5-10% below APH corn yields that year. Stack that on top of payments for loans used to buy high priced equipment to avoid massive tax bills and maybe you could start to see where all the cash went.

Uh yeah, West of hwy 81 and south of 212 it was bad in 2012. We were 5-6 miles from it but had one of our best crops ever due to a timely 2.5" rain in July. We are much worse off at this time than 2012.

In 2012, I combined a 300 acre field of corn and only got '2' light semi loads! That's roughly only 6-7 bushel per acre or 3.5% of APH. Absolutely horrible year. I think I had some soybean fields out yield the corn fields, ha!

How is it the Dakota’s have considerably bigger corn than we have in Iowa. I know you didn’t plant that much before us and I’m pretty sure you haven’t had more GDU’s.

I think eastern SD is warmer than MN? My son goes to SDSU in brookings and it seems many times they are warmer than we are, and they are roughly 60 miles farther north. I suppose someone will pull a map or chart that says I am wrong but it sure seems they warm up faster than we do.

Sometimes. But Brookings, Watertown, Summit tend to be cooler than the surrounding area (at least in SD) due to being a higher elevation. Typically it seems I’m 3-5 degrees cooler, sometimes up to 10 during the spring and fall, than Sioux Falls and I’m like 45miles north of SF.

This particular field is split with 101 day corn and 104 day corn. Planted on 4/22. I'm guessing most IA farmers plant 106-115 day corn?

Nice looking corn, man. Better than anything that I see in Southern Indiana, where it is all yellow and uneven. I keep hearing how good it is here in Indiana. Idk . Corn that is 2 months old that is only 4 inches tall with 3 leaves. About 3 hours of sunlight since April. Not worried or complaining. It'll be fine. I think you'll be fine too.

I have been to your farm. You need to post a disclaimer about your "magic soil" that resembles Iowa and Minnesota more than the Dakota's. I have read where you explain the same. We still have potential here, but today is brutal. Only June 10th. You have to play the odd's and the odd's are for me I don't make it through July and August.

Okay, so I get that you guys (heck ALL of us) need a good rain before it tassels, but the corn in that picture does not "need tonights rain!" a bit of leaf rolling at V5-V6 doesn't hurt a thing. It happens most every year here.

Is the weather pattern concerning? Yes...but lets not get overly dramatic just yet.

Probably has to do with the lack of soil moisture in the Dakotas and -0- rain chances with 90s for the foreseeable future. Tonight the Dakotas need this particular rain based on the current weather forecast.

Exactly! I agree it's not burnt up yet, and has all the potential in the world. BUT, if we miss tonights rain, the extended forcast is not friendly at all! Basically if we miss tonight, or get only under a half inch, I'm afraid the corn crop will be toast, or well below average at best.

Some people have never put 25 bushel corn in a silage bag, or harvested zero bushel corn with a batwing mower- and it shows.   I'd certainly trade every single acre of corn within 40 miles of where I am sitting for that corn in the OP, at this moment in time......
