Subject: Dementia in dogs?

Our old lady of the house is really starting to succumb to age. She's a mixed spaniel and is just not getting around to well any longer.

Most distressing is the fact that she seems to be half losing her mind. She's always been my buddy, and travel companion on the farm. Wherever I was she was. She was always ready for a ride in the pickup and would just spend hours trailing me around the fields.

Lately she's actually showing a fear of me. She won't come up to me to be petted, and shies away like a dog that's been beat. Once I get ahold of her and give her just the quickest of head rub or back scratch and she's all over me like the old days. Now she's starting to be the same way with Donna.

Ever see this before? I'm suspecting she won't see the spring green up, but I don't want her end time to be unpleasant, even in her mind.
