Subject: Fair wage for a high school kid?

Iowa
What do you consider to be a fair wage to pay a high school kid to do odd jobs part time around the farm during the summer? Main duties would be mowing, painting, cutting trees, washing equipment, etc.

I don't personally know the kid, but the high school guidance counselor highly recommends him, says he has a good work ethic and would be a self-starter.

Do you think that $8 per hour is a good starting point with a possible raise later if he is exceptional? I could provide him with a minimum of 10 hours of work per week, but would be willing to have him do much more if he is motivated and a self-starter.

Thanks.
