| No I don’t own an EV as such but while unloading a semi at the winery the other day with an electric fork lift I got to thinking. We have two electric and one lP fork lifts and I would rather drive the electric ones.
The electric ones are the only ones used inside the winery, the LP one has a rotator on it so is used outside for dumping bins. Capacity wise the LP and larger electric will handle 6000 lbs easily. A pallet of wine weighs close to 6000 lbs, a bin of grapes weighs from 900 to 1300 lbs. We will charge the electric one daily during high use times but during the rest of the year maybe once a week.
The LP one probably gets two tanks of LP a year and that gets burnt up during harvest which is about a month long. The reason it gets used sparingly is noise and smell.
I am not trying to make any radical statement, just pointing out the there many sides to an argument. Electric technology has been developed well enough to work in forklifts and work well. Would I be interested in an electric tractor or combine, not now but I wouldn’t rule it out in the future. The same with cars and trucks, I am not interested in owning one now but in the future it might make sense.
I appreciate people like Ed who are willing to try and learn about EV vehicles as well as share what they are learning. I am not looking at it as saving the planet, I am looking at it as new technology that isn’t totally proven as of yet.
It is kind of like going from horse power to gas powered vehicles I am sure there was a lot of discussion about it never working.
I am not trying to convince anyone to do anything but my suggestion is to try an EV if you want, otherwise sit back and watch and learn from others until you feel comfortable being a part of the revolution. The Amish are still driving horses so take your time deciding. |
