Le Sueur VIA St.Thomas | I have lived in my 9 year old house for about 3 years now. I went up into the attic last fall for the first time and found some trails in the insulation. Due to the 'activity'- trail size, droppings, I can tell that a large animal (cat, raccoon, etc) had been trapped up there for some time. Well, to make a long story short, I can't find a live animal up there (or a carcase) and now need to fix the insulation.
The insulation is maybe fiberglass- it looks like the attached pic. First of all, do I need to 'fluff up' the compacted insulation prior to reinsulating? Some of it would be hard to get to, but I could reach those spots with a hoe or stick or something. Secondly, what kind of insulation do I have and why do lumberyards only sell cellulose insulation. I'd like it to be a DIY project to save $, but can't find anyone who sells this this type on finsulation. This insulation seems much lighter and much fluffier than cellulose, so I got to believe that a topcoat of cellulose over the existing would be a bad idea.
The insulation is not itchy at all. It actually seems to be a very 'pleasant' material to be around. While I'm at it I will blow insulation in my garage attic that I am finishing and would like to add more depth to the existing house, so it will be a fair amount of insulation.
Any thoughts out there? I should just hire it out- any ideas of approximate cost (insulating 2 car garage, reinsulating attic)?
TIA -jim
