Subject: upright freezer frosting up

Manitoba
About a month ago, we bought a new Marathon 14.4 ft. manual upright freezer. It started frosting up inside immediately, so I asked at the store what the problem might be. They suggested going over the gasket with a hair dryer, but that didn't make any difference. The ice just kept building up and there was no suction on the door like I would have expected. A couple of days ago, my wife cleaned out the freezer and defrosted it. After that it worked like I thought it should. After closing the door, you can hear the crackling on the gasket and you can see the door suck in.
My question is, What made the difference?
