When I was young the most popular method of castrating calves was either cutting or using a burdizzo. In the winter we would cut and the rest of the year we would use the burdizzo. With the reemergence of the screw worm (I am in SE Texas) I am looking at moving back to the burdizzo. Why did we stop using it in the first place? Was it unreliable?
The vet I use also suggested moving to a burdizzo.
I am not really a fan of banding older calves as I have seen some issues with that.
Anyone else use a burdizzo? TIA
