Subject: Gastroparesis

NW Iowa
Have any of you heard of this malady? Do any of you have this problem? Gastroparesis means the stomach is digesting and emptying too slowly. The stomach muscles that move the food along are not strong enough. I have been having some stomach trouble starting last fall. My initial thought was "here we to again, the diverticulitis kicked up again". I went to the MD and a surgeon and after three negative CT scans and a gall bladder removal because of a stone, which didn't help me feel better I figured they didn't know what they were doing. Around the first of this month I finally called A gastroenterologist I have used previously . I got in right away, in two days. She ordered a lower and upper GI. The results came out to be a highly irritated lower esophagus and upper stomach. She told me to take Prilosec for two months. She also ordered a gastric emptying test for March 24 which was a few days ago. The results came in the mail Saturday, four double sided pages of what not to eat and what to eat and when to eat it. The Prilosec I have been taking has eliminated the stomach pain and most of the fullness in the upper gut but there is still a lump in my stomach sometimes after I eat. So here we go trying a new diet. The diet basically consists of no raw vegies, all vegies need to be cooked to soften the fiber. No fibrous fruits, fiber is hard to digest and will linger in the stomach too long. No alcohol, coffee or soda pop. No fat, no fried food, beef and pork are OK but trim the fat, fat slows down the digestive process causing reflux. Sometimes if solids are not working well the diet will have to be liquid using energy drinks.

The instructions mentioned nausea which I do not have and solid food seems to work OK for me so maybe some other people have worse symptoms than I do. I already do have a modified diet being gluten intolerant and I eat small already so changing the diet even more probably won't be as big of a deal as it would if I had been going into this being used to eating with no restrictions. So there it is in a nutshell. It's not the end of the world, it certainly isn't nearly as bad as some of you who are fighting the 'big C' so I really don't have much to complain about, and maybe this will help me shed a few LBS, I would like to get rid of twenty of them anyway.
