Subject: Some of my thoughts on one man operations

East Central Arkansas

There has been a couple of discussions over on the machinery forum about one man farming operations. Not really being machinery I moved over here to continue with my thoughts. I also realize that all the machinery page folks might not come over here but I thought I would continue here anyway.

I know some would consider me a one man operation but that is not so. My wife works full time with me, except in the Fall when she works at the gin office, and she does at least the work of two  employees around the farm. We are a very small cotton farm and there is allways work to be done if you will just make yourself do it. At the present time we are only working about 330 acres of cotton.  Three crops ago we cut back about half of what we had been working.

Now I don't doubt that a lot of these folks do what they say they do because I know a lot of folks that do the same here.  I also know that at times we spend a lot of time doing some things ourselfs that others hire done. Maintaining and repairing equipment ,changing oil in vehicals, mowing the yard the list goes on and on. I think a lot of times we tend to forget about some of the folks that are actually working for us, even though they are not employees.

I guess it's time for me to get out and go to work before I get flamed for setting around talking at 8:30 in the morning. One of the pleasures of not having a full time employee is not having set hours.
