just a tish NE of central ND
Here is a photo I recieved in my E mail.Once in a while this dragline needs to be moved to a new location on the oposite side of the 4 lane highway between Washburn and Underwood ND.So they close the road to trafic and lay down a dirt bed to try to save the highway from destruction. My oldest son got to work one summer durring college doing maintance on this unit in the coal strip mines .It is big.I believe it is all run by electricity and no engines at all.
The second photo makes the large road grader look like a toy. There are different styles of the trucks too. Probablly even bigger than these too, but I couldn't say for certain that they are larger and I dont have a photo of the other one I saw not long ago just off of hwy 200.
Moving a 100+ feet of dirt for a little seam of coal or tow that might not be more than 8 foot thick seems like a lot of effort put forth for what is there. But there is a lot of hidden stored energy down under the ground.I just hope the govt doesnt make it so tough with its laws and regulations that these local operation don't survive. That would be sad.
