NC Iowa | going to be flying soon, and have been reading about the new security backscatter xray machines the tsa started using 2 weeks ago. lots of concerns about the radiation exposure, and privacy issues. they can take extremly detailed images of the body, right through the clothing. they use them on children also, as the child pornography laws must not apply the goverment workers.
if you 'opt out' of the xray, you will be patted down with an open palm up each leg and inner thigh until they meet 'resistance' ie gentials. if your a female, you also get a open palm breast patdown.
from what i read, the main reason for the groping public patdown is to make sure people will use the machine as the least humiliating choice. even if you go though machine, you still may be selected for a 'random' patdown.
alot of people don't know about this yet, but will have a unpleasent choice to make for themselves and their children, as the busy thanksgiving travel begins. if i didn't have nonrefundable tickets purchased earlier, i would reconsider my plans.
after 4 years in the navy, i really don't give a rats rear about someone seeing me, although feeling my nuts is a different deal. i do feel for my wife though, as having me watch her get photographed naked, or felt up, or both, will not be easy.
very sad is the about the only way i can describe how i feel about the direction this is going.
