Dan Undersander and team at the UW-Madison have long discussed making hay in a day. What do you do when a good 2nd crop mixed stand is ready, the ground is wet from around 7" of rain in the past week and more is coming tonight and tomorrow? Not really conditions to make hay in a day but, as a one-man band, I managed to make baleage in two days. Mowed the very good mixed stand of grasses, alfalfa and red and some white clover on Monday afternoon, raked Tuesday morning, baled Tuesday afternoon and wrapped Tuesday evening. The stand was just right, if I wait for a dry stretch it will be past prime and gone to seed as much hay around here has done. It's tough to get the alfalfa and clover dry so I just figured on wrapping it. In the past I've tried waiting a day or so between baling and wrapping high moisture hay and that didn't work out well. So this was wrapped within a couple hours of baling. FWIW here are a few pictures over 2 days. Weather was so hot I went for the air conditioning of the heavier tractor mowing rather than the old lighter 7610. ETA: a lot of unusual difficulty loading and arranging pictures. apologies for the duplicates I'll just leave them. Have to go. Finally got pics to work.
