Subject: To Rent or Not to Rent

A little bit of a long one… I’m a young guy, Mid 20s, first generation with a decent cow herd. I rent an old Dairy farm with a couple barns and that is where everything is based out of.

Last couple years I have been wintering cows on cover crop and traveling a little ways for summer pasture. Last fall I picked up a small “pasture” just down the road from my farm and used it as a sort of calving lot this spring.

Fast forward to current day, I have the opportunity to rent this entire space at a decent price. It’s been left un farmed for many years but the owner just did a bunch of clean up and there is a good amount of native grasses growing but it is weedy and there are many bare spots from tree/brush removal.

Seems like a no brainer to jump on it especially as a large amount of grass in crop country. BUT it’s signed up for solar panels and hence the future of it is very uncertain for the next year or two before the company reaches a decision.

Anyone have some advice or ideas on how to lock this ground down and use in some fashion until the future has been decided and a longer term deal can be reached?

Though I do have some extra pairs that could graze this (would be under stocked), I am obviously I am hesitant to plant any grasses/buy extra cows and such until I know what the future looks like. If it wasn’t for the location and my desire to work with this property long term I’d have no problem passing it up but those things have me wanting to make it work somehow.
