Denmark | Our farm organization just released new calculations to the press:
In Denmark 18% of all food bought is thrown more or less directly into the garbage can. That is 2.8 billion US$ worth annually!
A family of 2 adults and 2 children will in December buy 820 $ worth of food and throw 164 $ worth of it away.
The amount of metric tons food discarded annually is:
Households - 340.000 tons
Retailers - 43.700 tons
Catering firms, restaurants, hospitals and other big kitchens - 15.700 tons
I am not sure what to make of those figures and I do not know whether such calculations are made in other countries. They do bring to mind though one of my dads statements: Agricultures best customer is the bottom of the sea.
(This statement was made bearing in mind WW2, where lots of supply ships were sunk).
