| I am posting this information to let all become aware of my wife and I's new venture in Agriculture. I am from an ag background, but with no land of my own to speak of, outrageous land and rent prices, and an extended family no longer in farming, I am unable to start farming in the conventional sense. My wife is not from an ag background but loves the outdoors and what living the country lifestyle and raising a family in this way has to offer. But enough about us.
The two of us, with the help of family and friends, have started a non-profit organization in West Central Illinois to help take in unwanted horses, further train them if needed, and eventually find good homes for them. Our organization is called the Double K Ranch Horse Rescue. Now we are by no means animal rights activists, or tree huggers. We decided to start this chapter in our lives because of the non existence of horse slaughter houses in the United States. Double K Ranch believes in humane horse slaughter and feels there is a real necessity for it, but currently, it looks like there is no sign of restarting one up in the US anytime soon. Because of this the horse market has taken a tumble in recent years. Families move to the suburbs, get a few acres, and think having a "pet" would be nice. Unfortunately they think a horse is the right way to go. After a couple of years, they realize they can't afford a horse or the kids have grown up and no longer have any interest. So now they are stuck with an animal that they don't want. And a horse is much harder to find a home for than a dog. (GO figure) So what do they do with it? Well, they either take it to a sale barn get next to nothing for it, and not know what kind of home it will go to, or they turn it loose. Yep, that's right, they turn it loose just like they would a dog or a cat. That is where we can be of assistance. We are a place that will take the horse either by donation or purchase, and find a good home for it in the future either by adoption or sale. If you don't believe there is a need for something like this, and maybe in your immediate are there isn't, please take into consideration that we had people ask us to take 11 horses from January to March and we weren't even up and running yet.
We are starting this project completely from scratch and ask for any monetary donations, tack and other supplies that you might be willing to donate. I am including a few pictures of the center piece of Double K Ranch. It is a very unique barn that was built in the early 1900's, is the only barn of its kind left in the county, and is in dire need of repair. Hopefully, with the Agricultural community's generosity, we can give unwanted horses a better life.
