NE IL | There have been dust storm events in Illinois the past few years. I’m 40 miles south of Chicago and last spring was the first time I’ve ever been in a dust storm warning and seen visibility reduced from dust across the entire area. A couple years ago ago we had some dusty air also. But before that I don’t remember ever having any widespread dust in the air around here. It it common in other areas of the eastern Corn Belt? Are people working the ground finer now?
I would think before no till planters and herbicides that the ground got worked really fine. I’ve been told that people used to go around and around on the clay spots around here trying to break up the lumps before they would plant.
What’s the reason why we have more blowing dust now than 20 years ago?
