Subject: This is how we mix our Manganese

Pictures tell most of the story, but...

We fill the totes a little more than 3/4 full of water, then add 12 bags of Manganese Sulfate powder and 3 bags of fine sugar. In order to mix this successfully it will have to be added slowly while the pump circulates the water. I've used an old planter box and cut a small hole ( 1.5" )in the bottom. This will let the powder flow into the tank at a constant rate. It takes 8 totes of mixed manganese sulfate and one with just water to fill one 2500 gal storage tank. That tank will foliar feed about 1000 acres of soybeans at the approximate rate of 2lbs active Manganese Sulfate /a. Take whatever you need from the tank to cover the acres in your sprayer and fill the rest with water. We apply at 15 to 20 gal/a depending on other ingredients in the foliar mix. In cases of severe Mn deficiency, you may have to make two applications per year. I'd like to get the first shot on last week of June before the beans flower which is usually the time they show the deficency. Takes a couple of days and they green right up. Manganese is important for seed germination. The mixing takes about a half day.

***The Manganese Sulfate is very eye irritant so wear googles or safety glasses. It's also hard on the hands, so a pair of gloves would come in handy. First time I mixed the stuf I got nosebleed from the dust. Now I wear a mask at all times. Once you figure out how to handle the stuff it's not all that bad.
