Subject: Oh how far the farm magazines have fallen!

Northeast Missouri

Probably already been a thread on this, but if so I missed it.

Flipping through the August issue of Successful Farming I skimmed an article on cover crops. Discussing a cover crop mix used by Clint Orr ahead of corn, they mention he's using a mix of barley, hairy vetch, oats, and rapeseed....and the accompanying photo on p. 38 has four sections showing (supposedly) barley seed, vetch, oats, and rapeseed.

Well, not quite.

The barley photo shows hulled barley...one of the kinds used for cooking? I don't plant barley so 'm not sure if anybody plants hulled barley or not, but I doubt it's common, at least not here.

The oats photo is worse...it is a photo of rolled oats!  I don't know Clint Orr, but I bet he's smarter than that & actually plants oat seed. Otherwise, he'd be scratching his head wondering why he doesn't get a better stand of oats.

Yeah, likely some young staffer Googled "oats" to find a photo of the article, but an editor or the author should have caught this! Looks like nobody involved with the article knew the difference between seed oats and breakfast cereal.
