MB, Canada | I was just thinking I'd add a few cow-related thoughts for anyone facing -20 and below who maybe aren't used to seeing those temps:
- a straw pack is great, but wind protection is an even bigger deal--windchill gets exponentially bad in extreme cold
- make sure they have really good water access--they need maximum rumination and thermal mass through these events
- 3-5 lbs of grain has a really positive effect on cattle when it gets really nasty out there
- try to feed for two days from now--if cows have lost condition due to cold and it's still that cold, you can expect at least two more days of condition loss even if you act right away
- layer up and keep your phone charged--minus 20-30 is when axles and stuff just start breaking, and it's a very bad feeling when it's minus 30 and you're stranded a mile from home
Good luck out there and stay safe! | |
