Eastern NE KS | I own a Vermeer bpx9000. It's about 10 years old. Great machine on new crop bales. However, I try to hold 10% of hay crop over to the next year. These seasoned bales stored outside will loose about 6" of hay on the bottom. This is no problem when feeding in dry weather. Damp or snowy weather can create a plugging problem. While it is easy to unplug from the output side, it is a waste of time.
I'm told the Vermeer bpx9010 fixed this issue by shortening bottom side of the output chute. On mine wet or muddy material clings to this surface, once started it easily accumulates even dry stuff then plugs. If I catch it in time and slow the rate of feed, sometimes it will clear. Since I'm often in a pasture with baby calves my attention is focused on them instead. While unplugging, curious calves will join me under the hood to help.
I have never had a feeding problem with new crop hay from my bale yards. In fact, I have had good luck with even older hay where the chain and slat drive is pulling the outside rounds off a bale that is not turning .
