No, its not new for TV networks to switch to a game that is closer and more entertaining in hopes of keeping viewers on their network broadcast.
People get up and leave blowout games that they spend $100's/ticket to attend before they're done, its really easy to flip the channel from your living room chair to a game that isn't a blow out.
When the 3rd string starting QB gets replaced with the 4th string QB because their lead is safe, the game is already over. Honestly, that game was over prior to halftime.
