Missouri | I'm just curious, but did he happen to talk about integrity? Some of us would love to watch that portion of the speech.
As for selection via the numbers. True accuracy comes from whole herd reporting. Unfortunately, some associations refuse to move forward in order for customers to get a full understanding of where animals actually align on the bell curve. When you're forced to only select from outliers raised in an artificial environment, the loser of the bunch might just be the only one that's actually capable of recreating himself and his perceived progress. Discussing outliers and how they fit into today's marketing model isn't something many people have an interest in, and for obvious reasons. Waiting for real world accuracy to overwhelm the genomics assigned accuracy is painfully slow. It also requires being willing to admit the system isn't quite what it proclaims itself to be.
Many trait packages currently being selected for are also full of antagonism at the basic level, so it's no wonder half the cow herds are in the mess they're in. Many of them don't do much right by their owner, but they can do a few things well if you're willing to feed them enough. Again, discussing these antagonisms requires admitting there's a significant flaw in the current theory.
Leaning into the original post's mention, for some odd reason the majority of the beef industry has been convinced one cow can do it all. For the most part, the tab for chasing this mantra is only being removed from one of two specific pockets depending on the set of cattle. In industries where the equity has already been harvested, they play a very different form of ball. One we've always known has existed, but few still play in today's beef industry. When the mantra from the top begins to shift, it's probably a good time for the cow man to have that dispersal before everyone else does because a change will be a coming. Everything will then be much easier once you're told exactly how to feed the maternal, the terminal, or the hybrid calves they've placed under your care. |
