Graymont Illinois

How do you get rid of old tires? I know how I am not supposed to.
I remember when there was tire pickup days where you could get rid of farm tires, how long ago was that? 10-20 years ago.
I bought a pair of rear tires for a tractor, 18.4x38, and it cost me 100$ to get rid of each old tire.
Thanks Brian

They have the clean up days where i used to live in ellis county tx . last year anyhow .

Not sure about here in south texas .

I " heard" a 10.00x 16 will burn pretty fast on a foggy night .

I think a 18,4 would be way too much for the "foggy night " plan . and im WAY out of town , 25 plus miles .

I gave away the last front set from a mfd 7140 to some fellows that wanted to flip them over for a workout .

When i change them again ill put them on facebook marketplace ,you might be surprised at people that want them .

A 28L-26 likes lots of fog or snow, and preferably being rolled to the bottom of the hill.

I have a couple of junk 620-70R42s than actually turned into pretty serviceable raised garden beds.

Last 38’s I had we gave away to a guy who wanted to paint them green and make a Christmas wreath for his yard.

Last bill I got from local tire shop they had raised disposal on 9.5L15 tires to $10. Probably not going to go that route for $10 next time.

They used to throw them in places that were washing out. Once they outlawed that those places are about out of control washing out.

Really guys it's easy! Those people that move into the country want to grow a garden. I had a new move in gal ask me for some old tires to make raised beds out of. I said you bet; I'll bring them to you today. I didn't want her asking or telling her husband before I got there. I loaded up a 18' dump bed of all my used tires. Semi, tractors, pickups you name it. I had truck there in three hours and dumped them by garden. I felt so good in helping her out with her green thumb. Let's just say her husband wasn't too proud of me, but I said she ordered them. I was just doing what was asked of me. He just shook his head.

Fancy prairie, Illinois
If you have a bunch call Earth Services out of
Benton Illinois the run routes through illinois weekly. Anywhere from $6 for a car tire to their calculation based on diameter. I believe a semi tire is about $15.

County recycle center here takes them for $.10/lb.. I've got lucky a time or two and hauled good tires back out so didn't even cost that much. Once they had a pair of 18.4/38 firestones, all the tread was gone on one, but the other had about 1/3 tread and made a good match for one I had.

Throw them on a brush pile.

Not your fault if lightning strikes them that night.

Actually this is a use for them, not a disposal method.
Kinda like recycling,
Use them for a heat source.

Rent one, or two, or a few of those storage units in a town several miles from home and fill them up. Then just don't pay the rent when it comes due. I hear it works pretty well. Can even charge some of the neighbors a discounted rate and pick some of theirs up too. Can make some pretty good money with this method.

Do not burn when foggy. It is absolutely best to use at say 3am bright stars clear calm, use at base of brush.Any one caught with tires here does it on a low air pressure, foogy, drizzly day.smell stays down to ground, bad. The 3am method works as the pile is just wood going well at sunrise. This is what I have been told by evil farmers,,ehhehe

Another method is to hire a truck to haul them off to a destination in the middle of the Mississippi river. Works best if you can load them at a location that is not your property.

You could throw them along the road at the swamp by my house like everyone else does. Seriously though, check with anyone that sells tires in your area. Around here it's $3/car tire. Semi tires and bigger ag tires are more, but not a ridiculous amount.

Start feeding cattle, they work great for holding down plastic.

They should take them back for free, disposal fee should be paid when you buy them. This would curtail illegal dumping.

Around 20 years ago someone dumped 6 used car tires on the corner of an 80 my dad owned. It was an intersection for 2 busy county blacktops. He stacked them and put a "For Sale" sign next to them. Next day only one tire was left, others were stolen.

I had a couple used tractor tires to get rid of. One was bad due to a sprung rim causing uneven wear. Sold them to a guy needing rubber for duals on a manure hauling tractor.

Had another set of rear tractor tires I sold to a guy looking for tires on his pulling tractor. They didn't have enough grip for field work but were good for pullers.

Stack em up and use them as a burn barrel. Works really good one time. Winter in a snow storm works good.

Have a couple options here. One is to take them to the landfill and pay them. The other way, the one I use, is take them to my tire store and pay him to get rid of them. I'm not an activist by any means, but right is right and wrong is wrong, IMO.

Or, you can do what some low-life SOB did a few years ago about a mile east of me. Just backed into a field driveway with a truck and dumped a whole load in the guy's field. Of course, the farmer had to get someone to haul them to the landfill. Not sure what the cost, if any, was. Sheriff had a good idea who did it, but couldn't prove anything.

As far as all the suggestions to burn them, or "lightning", or whatever, I personally knew a farmer in Iowa that cleaned mature trees out of a drainage ditch, about a mile, IIRC. Piled them up and put tires in the piles for heat, and lit them. Got caught, and he had to haul the ashes and contaminated dirt from under all the burn piles to the landfill. Not cheap. Just so you know that could happen.

A guy we know was getting ready to have an auction. He decided to burn a pile of tires on a foggy morning, he couldn't even see his mailbox it was so foggy. Should be safe to get away with it, right?
Well, somebody saw it or smelled it and turned him in to the DNR. The game warden showed up and told him he was getting a ticket for illegally burning a small # of tires. When the guy started to complain, the warden pointed to the pile of ash with steel wires from burned tires and said if I dig thru that pile I bet I'll find evidence that you burned a lot more than that, do you want me to do that? The guy shut up and accepted the ticket.
Our county hazardous waste facility used to promote Earth Day -- they would accept tires, etc for a fee depending on size, they held the event one Sat morning each year. They would get "Sentence to Serve" people to do the physical labor. They haven't done that for a few years, not sure why, maybe no federal funding for that any more?

We haul them to the landfill, it's cheaper than the tire dealer.

I'm not sure if it's comical or disturbing how many people with 6-8 figure incomes from farming will complain about a $10 tire disposal fee.

I usually pay to have them taken by the tire retailed I bought new tires from or take them directly to a recycling center.

Anyone recycle at https://libertytire.com/ ? They have many locations.

You can check with the county road department, they have a pickup service to come get them, might be cheaper than a tire dealer

It is kind of to bad. There used to be a place that recycled them into bumpers for power poles etc in South Sioux city.
It seems any place that recycles them gets put out of business.
It seems I heard they were not going to allow them to be used to hold tarps down any more. Is that true?
Perhaps they were cracking down on the outfits that cut them in half.
