Subject: RE: Bar Joist For Shed?

MI

hoofer - 11/27/2022 22:16 Need a cold storage building. Has anyone used bar joint in place of I beams to build a shed . Looking at 40 plus foot trusses, would support them in the middle with a post . Could I space them at 20 to 25 feet with purlins between? I’m trying to think outside the box , inflation is real. Wind is our biggest issue in my world, would be at least a 4/12 pitch. Thanks

OK then

When you're talking about general conventional steel:

  • Footings supporting columns.....not "post"
  • Columns are used to support main beams (like I beams) or girders
  • Girders are generally used in place of beams to support roof members such as joist. Girders are designed for a specific "point loading". In other words, spacing of joist for a roof system
  • Here in Michigan, most roof joist are are designed for 5' to 6'8" spacing. Floor joist are often at 2' spacing. These spacings are generally based on the spanning capabilities of the decking. Joist are generally sized by weight capacity per lineal ft and most often without any point loading capability

"Looking at 40 plus foot trusses, would support them in the middle with a post"

I'm assuming you're saying you want to support the joist in the middle???
