Living in Minnesota with our snow load I can’t comment on what works there, it’s very different here.
However, the 20 or 40 feet across wouldn’t be a problem, but I’ve never seen these strong enough to be spaced 20 feet apart from each other! Again, we have very different needs here, and I’m sure someone somewhere makes them strong enough to do that, but it would have to be one heck of a joist to basically hold up a 20 by 20 square of roof individually.
Myself, I would never ever put poles down the middle, but you didn’t ask that so don’t want to sidetrack your conversation.....
