Traditionally, a drill is a machine that evenly spaces the seed underground. A planter is a machine that plants two or more kernals in a hill, like the old check row planters that would drop three or four in a hill.

For some reason we still call our corn machines a planter even though they "drill" the corn.

(edit) If you look at my profile the webmaster has just changed my rank to "expert" so I must be right.
