As an example, the flag should not be printed on a T shirt, but carried on a stick for display. So get a look at what Kmart shoppers bring home. I've seen Kmart selling beach towels resembling full American flags and they lay on them at the beach.
Those decorated truck & tractor pics don't show an American flag, but elements of the flag. I've never heard any complaints about using stars & stripes in paint schemes not absolutely resembling the flag.
A proper flag on a truck should be carried on a stick in front of the exhaust.
