They tend to tighten themselves, and my experience was they you soon learn how to get them to release. Usually, you just need a way to grip the drill press shaft to keep if from turning backwards when you try to open the chuck. Just grabbing the drive sheave with one hand is usually enough to do the job. But after using one for a while you never want to use a chuck with a key again.
