Subject: RE: JD4240 with Turbo.

Denmark
I bought a 4240 new in 1980.
A year later the importer offered to retrofit all 4240´s sold here with a Garrett turbo, new pistons, sleeves connecting rods, pins and bearings to match the added power. The whole thing was offered because the tractors quickly got known for being extreme fuel hogs compared to other brands. The whole modification cost a modest 1800 USD.

The pump settings were not altered, so the effect was noticeably higher tourque and lesser fuel consumption.
After a few ears marketing Deere discontinued the 4240 and marketed the 4240S instead. It was the same tractor except for a MFWD front axle and factory installed turbo +not least an inline Bosch injection pump. This pump made a tremendous difference compared to the Roosa Master rotor pump on the original 4240.

We still have the 4240. It is a very well built, reliable tractor almost trouble free. You just have to remember, that with the Quad range transmission a complete stand still is a must before shifting to reverse. I know several people who have spent a heap of money on trans repair after neglecting this.

My experience is, that a turboed 4240 is a more fuel friendly and better lugging tractor than a straight 4240.
No other differences, neither + nor -.

Except for the still too high fuel use I am a big fan of our 4240.
Feel free to communicate back if you need further info.
