Subject: RE: JD 4430 burning up clutches

Idaho
It's been a couple years since this thread, so I'll give an update. I replaced the single acting cylinders on the rake with double acting and tightened the hydraulic bypass screw back in. I used the 4430 for about 150 hrs and the clutch burned up again this spring pulling a light chain harrow. The JD place wouldn't stand behind the clutch so I ended up shipping the tractor to a different company. The new mechanic said the clutch had gotten so hot that the steel was blued. He discovered that the hoses were reversed on the oil cooler so the oil wasn't dumping back on the clutch. I've probably put another 150 hrs on it now and so far so good.

There was also an internal leak in two of the SCV valves which may have contributed to the first clutch burning up so quickly when I had the hydraulic bypass screw turned out to run those single acting cylinders the first year.
