| First corn head I’ve ever owned, and first time working on it.
I was told it had the calmer slow down system on it. The front sprockets are shot, and so are gathering chain. I was told I can run standard gathering chains, but have to run the 9 tooth calmer sprockets, with the calmer drive sprocket. So I plan on shelling corn next week, and have bought all new calmer idler sprockets, and also Deere gathering chains.
1. Do I eliminate this grease zerk piece? I’m assuming it’s completely useless with the new sprocket.
2. Did this head have the calmer idler sprockets or not? They’re the same number teeth, but not near as heavy as the new one. New one also has bearing held in by snap ring. I take it the bearing will be bad before the sprocket is wore?
3. Snap ring facing up or down when I put it together, it has a washer/bushing/cap type piece for each side.
4. What is the process of tensioning the gathering chain? Certain spec to get the right tension? I loosened the nut off the long bolt/pipe/spring piece. And it all came apart. I just want to be sure of any tips/tricks to go back smoothly.
5. Lastly, I hear people say to flip the drive sprocket. Do I need to swap the drive sprockets with the opposite side, or flip them upside down? Or does it matter.
I know it’s a lot, but just want to take care of this head.
