Subject: RE: Winter wheat vs triticale hay

SW Nebraska Panhandle

Sold some triticale hay to a freind a while back and he loved it.  He had a cattle buyer out that saw him feeding it (it looked like straw).  The cows were eating the triticale and ignoring the 3rd cutting alfalfa nearby.  Next day the guy called me up to buy a load to send from W. Nebraska to New York.  Freight cost more than what I got for the hay but he had lots of money.  After that he found some closer.

Yes, cows really like it but can't compare to wheat hay (we harvest ours for grain).  We try and swath it just before heading if weather permits.  We raise winter triticale - Pica variety.  Some varieties get taller but have less leaf.  So they are advertized as producing more tonnage but my experience it that they are more stem and less leaf - less quality.  So variety makes a difference.

It always regrows and we can either get a very small 2nd cutting or we let the cows graze it.  Seeds formed on the 2nd cutting do not produce viable seeds.  We have never had any volunteer even if we follow with wheat.  I was concerned about that but it has never been a problem.  Only time we had volunteer triticale was when we harvested some for seed and the seed looks just like wheat.  But even that went away after another year.
