| The batteries in the 24 volt 3010, 3020, 4010, and 4020 diesels never get switched. The are wired as others have said, with the center of the 24 volt battery grounded. The generator (or alternator) and starter are not grounded, but work at 24 volts. The center tapped battery gives a +12 volt circuit and a -12 volt circuit with respect to ground for 12 volt accessories. Its important that the current for accessories like lights is the same for each 12 volt wire, else the batteries won't be charged equally. The batteries are charged in series and the starter loads them in series. One set of lights loads one battery, the other set loads the other battery. Its far less complicated than it seems.
Its no different than the 120/240 volt DC Thomas Edison used in the 1880s in cities except its 1/10th the voltage and there his generators were tapped.
