Subject: Winter wheat or spring wheat

EC IL
I live in Illinois, and not much wheat got planted in EC, IL this fall. Can anyone tell me the difference between the wheat we plant in the fall, and the wheat that is being planted today in the state of Kansas?
I have been told that our wheat needed to be planted during a small window of time in the fall to be able to get enough growth to go through the winter. Also our type of wheat would not do well if planted in the spring. I have never before heard of wheat being planted this late in December. Just wondering.
