Subject: Rolling basket vs crumbler vs packer

This is also a follow up of the which cultivator thread trying to decide between a 980 Deere and DMI Tigermate II, I ended up finding a nice 28’ 980 with tine harrows close to home for a fair price.

Thinking about pulling a rolling basket of some sort behind, found a Sunflower that seems to be more of a crumbler, any reason this won’t work behind a cultivator? I belive the Sunflower basket is 18” diameter with round bars, worried they may be too far apart to break up lumps? Don’t need to smash everything down fine but would like to break up the big ones and firm the seedbed up some. Maybe more for behind a disk or would it be fine behind a cultivator? Would a packer make the ground too fine? Likely only pull it behind the cultivator for the second pass. Have pulled a land roller before planting and that’s maybe too aggressive. Or should I stick to looking for a rolling basket that’s smaller diameter with flat bars? Also thinking about a narrow spacing disk for some high residue situations like corn stalks where I would normally notill but need to smoothen things out, I could use the Sunflower crumbler style basket behind that and it may to a better job there vs a smaller rolling basket?

Working up wheat and bean stubble that has been worked in the fall and going into corn usually. 5-6mph is about all I go with tillage. Clay loam soil that you absolutely can not work wet so not worried about plugging baskets. Never had any sort of rolling basket/crumbler before so don’t know much about them other than what I’ve seen driving by looking at the job of those who do have one and I’ve never pulled a packer in worked ground, it left when the roller showed up.
