One Option that I'll throw out (some of this has been mentioned) but have you looked at starting your own consulting business. I agree that agromists working for elevators ultimately try to push their own product. If It were myself in your shoes, and speaking from a 33 yrd old full time farmer here's what I can see that upcoming needs are.
First I'd get into soil salpling and GPS mapping,
Second, look into doing manure management plans. It's a way to incorporate the grid sampling.
Third, there are getting to be a number of grants out there, study up on them and learn how to write grants and and assit in that way
the latest ones are energy effiecient, such as grain dryers and wind turbines

Forth, build a realtionship with farmers and see where it takes you.
I too see to many college grads that lack commen sense, Allot of successful businessmen these days never went to college, granted it's not an excuse to skip a college education, but there are those out there that have done well without one, but have allot of common sense and a good work ethic.
