Those rocks are another reason for using a "pea bar" that just has fingers on it behind the sickle to slide the crop up on to the header. The theory is that the rocks will drop out and not go up into the machine. Those JE Love flexible cutter bars or "pea bars" are also available with sheetmetal behind the sickle made in short sections so that it will flex.
