| Yes, Starter is just that bit put next to the seed, a small fraction of the total crop requirement. Just to give the sprouts a little kick out of the ground. Often its so little quantity that its not subtracted from that supplied for the main crop need. e.g. Might need 150 pounds of N for the crop but put only 2 pounds in the start up. Might need 100 pounds of N but put only 4 pounds in the start up, and might need 150 pounds of K but out only 2 pounds in the start up mix. The rest has to be spaced else it would burn the seed or seedling.
I think many have tried starter and see a visible early year difference, but many fewer have detected a significant increase in the crop yield or dry down which makes the starter rather expensive just for looks. And handling starter with the planter sure slows down planting progress. When I put down 60 pounds of N as 32% with the planter I was filling the sprayer tank far more often than the seed hoppers. But getting that much N down with the planter sure made a nice corn crop without needing a lot of N. In 2007 with a total of 111 pounds of N with the planter and side dressed I raised 173.2 bushel corn. I broadcast MAP before planting and used a dab of AMS with the glyphosate. After 35 bushel (poor) beans.
