I used to subscribe to your belief about lock washers, but I have revised it in the case of bolts on Cultivator shovels. At least in the conditions I use a cultivator in, striking a rock can stretch the bolt and you no longer have a tight bolt. With a lock washer, you have what they used to call "a chinaman's chance" of remaining tight.
