Southern Alberta Canada | Never had one unhook. I run the chain through the D ring and bring the hook just over the deck with the opening up and hook it to the chain. I prefer old style overcenter binders and hardly ever use a snipe to tighten it then use wire to secure the handle to make sure it doesn't come undone. The idea for me is to secure the load and prevent it from shifting and to do that you don't need to secure everything so tight it destroys your load, trailer or securment devices. People need to realize if you're hauling a ridgid piece of equipment on a flexible trailer something has to give and chances are it's your securment devices so if you get into a situation that is going to shock load your unit the chances of chains and boomers loaded to 90% capacity already failing are far greater than mine at 0 to 20%.
I do similar with any type of load and securment method, to me it's important to stop and check the unit and load after a few miles and make adjustments as necessary.
I've used ratcheting binders in the past and to me they were a pain and finicky. Maybe new ones are different but the ones I used would fall apart on the headache racks, pins for the ratchets would seize, they would ice up and I'd have to spend some time removing the ice before loosening them, you needed to hold the chain from turning, have to spend a couple minutes ratcheting to get then done up, were a pain to use in tight places and were heavy. I went back to overcenter binders and simplified my life. | |
