Ron, I know of no "official" was to use D rings (the point of your original question), but running through the D and hooking back to itself with a grab hook is the common way. If you want to go to more trouble/work, you could wire the second link back from the hook into the matching link of other side of chain and the hook is not coming off its link. I have also seen grab hooks that have a spring loaded keeper/latch that locks it on the link, like some safety chains on new equipment.
