I agree. I'm not familiar yet with the r series but doesn't sound mechanical.

How about putting a short harness between the coils and oem plug with a toggle switch to kill the power to the coils. If that stops the flow, it's definitely not a mechanical issue.

It timing out and stopping seems like a glitch. Some places like the throw expensive parts at stuff first then do diagnostics. They do have 99% more experience than me though. Some self tested like I've mentioned above will definitely help figure out where to start. I haven't looked at my r to see what connectors you would need to make that work. At worst you could just unplug each coil when it does it and see if flow stops.
