I've posted about starling traps in the past, they work well. The biggest problem is the first year. You generally have to empty the trap multiple times a day if you have very many. After the first year, it's usually not nearly as bad.

Might work. The problem I see is that starlings and sparrows will go into a bigger hole, and build a nest in the trap, if it's not sensitive enough to catch them.

Otherwise, the key features that make this trap design work are that starlings are cavity nesters who don't mind nesting in or around human buildings. Woodpeckers, for example, usually avoid something this close to buildings.
But pigeons don't mind buildings either.
