Hay storage, I know you gotta keep it dry. Different locations have differing needs. But for most barns around here there is no need for 3 feet of rock for a base. Digging down and putting 2-3' of rock would make for more problems, getting it compacted enough so the concrete poured over it would not settle and crack. The undisturbed soil makes a good base. All I've ever seen done is take off a few inches of topsoil, dig footing around the edge, and put in a few inches of rock, or limestone to the grade needed, plastic, and concrete poured on that. That applies to shops, machine sheds, grain bins, etc.
